Many people head off to teach English with only a degree and a passport from an English speaking country. While that is totally doable, it's just not my style. I wanted to be a little more prepared for my first day in the classroom. So I got TEFL certified.
There are many different programs to get certified. After doing a lot of research about the top programs and what they offer, I chose to go with International TEFL Academy's Online Program. There were two main reasons. First it was top-rated on many different rankings. Second it offered a lot of assistance, from life-time job assistance as soon as you register to office hours with your professors. For me, these made the higher price tag worth it.
While I'm only halfway through the program as of writing, I'm impressed. As an online class it offers enough freedom for a busy college student to complete, but is also jam packed with useful information. I already feel 10x more prepared for teaching real students, and I'm not even finished yet.
The biggest plus has been the plethora of information on jobs. I'm talking 450 page PDF big. Packed into this document are resume tips and templates, job requirements for any country you could dream of teaching in, and different schools/recruiters/companies ITA recommends in each country. There's even a step by step list on how to get a job in your country of choice.
I could gush for a while about how helpful ITA has been, but I won't because I know you've got other things to do this week. I would recommend checking it out if teaching abroad is something you are interested in. Take your time, research your options, but I would highly recommend having ITA on your list.
